I have an old Gateway 1150 laptop with Win ME on it.
I was wondering if an upgrade to XP pro would be worthwhile or would it just bog it down?

Depends on the processor option you have and memory. I'm running XP Pro on an old Compac that's 650 mhz with maxed out memory (64 meg) and it's a little slow compared to my dual 3.0 dual core processor machine, but it works just fine.

I put XP on an old gateway we had here that was running , I guess win 98 and it cant handle it.
It works but it's reeeeaaaallllyyyy ssssllllooooowwwwwww...

he just uses it for homework so it's ok, but it really struggle to open and run other applications.

Unless you have a good reason to need XP, just leave it. Although, there are ways to strip out some XP bloat to make it run faster on slower machines, if you're determined. Be determined to work for it, though

If you don't have 800MHz or faster and 512MB or bertter fuhgeddaboudit. Not worth your time.

I have an old Athlon 800Hz PC with 384 RAM and XP on it. Works fine, of course a little slower though than my more modern machines but fine for listening music. Well, you don´t cut movies on that one.
