I always thought the "civil union" thing was a bunch of shit. where does this leave a couple married in California as far as federal law goes? Tax Filings and Estates and such? this is the sort of thing that makes the next 8 years and the potential court appointments therin so important. McCain will put uber conservative judges in there if he can...And he'll use this to try to rally the evangelicals.

That won't happen, I think, until 26 states constitutionalize same sex marriage. Students of the Phelps School of Thinking are hemhorraging out of their ears over this. Gonna be a lot of dead soldiers coming home from Iraq if God has His way.

Put another way, abolish secular marriage and replace it with a civil union contract that includes all the legal rights and obligations of today's marriage. Let marriage be a purely religious practice that has no standing in secular law. That way, religionists can have their marriages however they want them, and the State can concentrate on enforcing contract law, which is all a secular marriage is -- a partnership contract with special clauses. Just think -- that solves the polygamy issue, the same-sex issue, the polyandry issue, and the "what, me get married?" issue all at once. Less government is better.
